SkyWest Moves Meridian Flights to United Airlines as of July 1, 2020

MERIDIAN, Miss. –Meridian’s airline partner, SkyWest, will partner with United Airlines to provide Meridian’s air service as of July 1, 2020 with two daily flights to Houston’s Bush Intercontinental Airport. Tickets will go on sale April 11, 2020 on the United Airlines website

This is great news for Meridian.  The Meridian Airport Authority had commissioned a study in 2018 to evaluate whether a move to United Airlines would benefit Meridian in the long run.  While United Airlines connections worked very well, there was no reason to ask SkyWest to change to United at that time. In early March, SkyWest notified us that American Airlines had reached a threshold in its pilot contract that required it to reduce or eliminate service to nearly a dozen communities in the US, including Meridian.  SkyWest immediately approached United Airlines, which agreed to partner with SkyWest to serve Meridian effective July 1, 2020.The City of Meridian is grateful to SkyWest for believing in Meridian and for its willingness to partner with United Airlines to provide this service.  United brings a global airline to Meridian with a strong network.  We look forward to helping SkyWest grow the United brand in Mississippi.

The Meridian Airport Authority is grateful to SkyWest for its confidence in East Mississippi. As Mayor Percy Bland said in his news release today, when told it would no longer be able to partner with American Airlines in a dozen communities across the US due to pilot union limits on aircraft numbers, SkyWest didn’t walk away.  Instead, it approached United Airlines, which was happy to be the hero and allow excellent air service to continue in East Mississippi.

We are so happy that our outstanding airline staff will continue to work as the ground crew and provide the high quality of service the passengers of Meridian Regional Airport enjoy.

We do not know a flight schedule at this time, other than we will have two, daily, round-trip flights to Houston’s Bush Intercontinental Airport.  United Airlines normally operates 407 daily flights connecting passengers to the world from Houston.  Flights are scheduled to be available on United’s website on April 11, 2020.  In Mississippi, United Airlines currently serves only Jackson and Gulfport.

Looking at some advantages, Houston has better on-time performance than Dallas, and the aircraft for our flights will be housed in Meridian overnight, a real plus. For travelers disappointed about the shift from a Dallas to a Houston hub, please note that passengers can connect from Houston to Dallas, if they wish. We know change is never easy but, as a smaller airport, we are proud to continue to offer excellent service to a major hub, especially at a time when many smaller communities are losing service entirely.
